About the Artist
Teri Berkengoff is a Textile Artist who specialises in quilting. Her quilts or ‘fabric collages’, as she likes to call them, are vibrant and colourful. Taking inspiration from a variety of sources, from spirituality and meditation to street art, her work is dynamic, bold and energetic.
Teri studied Fashion Design at Middlesex Polytechnic during the 1980s, followed by a period of volunteering in Nigeria where she taught sewing skills in a women’s centre. On her return to the UK, Teri didn’t pursue a career in fashion and textiles and instead went into the corporate world.
She says, “During this time my creativity was very much dampened and it wasn’t until 2019 that I picked up a needle again.”
Initially making quilts for Project Linus, a charity that distributes quilts to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children, Teri soon found that her quilts started to take on a life of their own as they began to get more creative and artistic.
More recently she has incorporated embroidery into her work to create a series of Little Local Landmarks, and says, “the quilts take so long to make and are so big!”.
Teri has a policy of using materials (including frames) with sustainable credentials such as charity shop finds and pre-loved items. More recently, she has been using plastic bags and packaging in her work.
